When Listening to your Body Makes all the Difference...This past week, I had the unique pleasure of chaperoning my son’s cross country team in Colorado. What started as a long 11 hour trip out ended as a short 11 hour return.
Within the first few hours of driving, my glutes cramped up and my knee began to swell. Clearly, I had not familiarized my body to the force of such a trip and the beating it was about to receive. When we arrived to our cabin in Granby, I immediately unpacked and began introducing my body to the 8,000 foot altitude that I would consider home for the duration of the trip. With the swelling in my knee and glute pain dissipating I prepped for our first run. Light stretching, a few gulps of water, and off we went… This is a long story- but I’ll give you the bite size summary!
With a love of all things natural and an aversion to medication, my career path evolved into one based on holistic medicine. One that allowed me to encompass my love of the medical community without the side effects- both literally and figuratively. Massage therapy allowed me to focus on finding alternative solutions to the PROBLEMS, rather than masking the symptoms. 2 years into my massage career and the abdominal pain I went through in adolescence worsened. Some days my husband would find me doubled over in pain and unable to move. What I thought were menstrual cramps, turned out to be endometriosis- on steroids. 2 surgeries later...Doctors informed me that although additional children will never be in my future, the pain would minimalize if not entirely dissipate. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for me. As one to refuse medications, I looked for an alternative to ease the pain. Not only did eating a healthier and natural diet and exercise assist, but to my surprise, so did massage!! Now, why didn't I think of that?! So here I am, 27 years old, looking to change the mindset that medications are the only options to pain relief. And how will I do that? By starting a blog! A blog to help others improve their health and most importantly to know that there are alternative options to medications that CAN help! Life isn't perfect and speed bumps along the way will take you off course. When that happens, veer back on the path and keep moving forward. Because a body in motion, stays in motion! I hope you will follow along with my journey as I work through life's ins and outs with the role massage can play both mentally and physically. |
